With a number of competitive entries on the card at the 2000 Guineas meeting at Newmarket on Saturday (4th May), we were very happy to see James’s Delight back in the winner’s enclosure after a smart success in the three-year-old Handicap. His form suggests he is most effective running over six furlongs, particularly after bolting up in a very impressive season debut at Pontefract last month, so we were pleased that dropping him back from seven rewarded him comfortably once again.
The step up in class, whilst defying top weight, made the 1¼ length achievement even greater as we watched him come alive when Richard Kingscote asked him to make his move from halfway. As he galloped for home, it’s easy to see he is a sprinter with plenty of ability and to have him back winning so strongly makes for a satisfying day’s work and a terrific outcome for his owners, Paul & Clare Rooney. It was made all the more special as their daughter, Olivia, was there to collect their prize. He could be a possible starter in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury on 18th May.
